Wow, the sharpness & detail is mind-blowing!

I'm pleasantly surprised at how well the 100-400 works with the extender. Do you have a good keeper rate with this combo?
I would think the AF performance & IQ would take a hit with the extender.

Between the 5D4 and 1DXII, do you have a favorite?

Thanks for sharing these fantastic photos.

Just think about that for a second. Think the evidence speaks for itself.

The 100-400 is such an awesome lens. I'd almost put it into prime IQ, it's that good.. the AF is quick, and 4 stop IS and is a small/lightweight package you can really get down to some nice 1/50th shutter pans. That said, it does take a lot of practice but, panning at slow speed really isolates the subject, conveys motion and transforms a photo.

I think because the glass on a 100-400 & 500 is so good, even by the time it goes through an extender, there's still so much detail/contrast in the images that nothing really touches it. Having owned the sigma 150-600, there's just no comparison.. really.. non whatsoever. Even a direct comparison between the canon 100-400 & sigma 150-600 at 100.. 200..300.400mm, the canon is just way, way sharper. Add a 1.4x extender to the canon, and you're still way ahead over the sigma...

For each 10 min aircraft display, i usually shoot about 1000 images. Out of that 1000, I get about 100 sharp(ish).. From that 100, there's about 20 i'd consider keepers.. I'm quite pedantic when it comes to keepers, so what some might keeper, I chuck. I can then prune it down to 1 or 2 keepers that are better than the others..

Without a doubt the DX2 is better than the 5d4.. The biggest feature over the 5d4 is the frame rate.. 14 vs 7.. and the cfast slot means I can pretty much shoot unlimited frames before hitting the buffer, unlike the 5d4. When shooting aerobatics or fast jets, that 7fps difference is huge. Roll rates are staggeringly fast and it's the difference between capturing something unique and completely missing it. I like the ergonmics on the dx2, as my 5d4 doesn't have a grip. I don't think there's too much variance, if any, between the dx2 and 5d4 in terms of AF and IQ. If I had a choice between 2x DX2s and DX2 and 5D4, i'd go the 2x DX2s anyday, but my bank balance isn't unlimited hehe. Some have said, why don't you go a 7d2 instead. I'm not a fan of crop sensors, love the look of full frame and overwhelming evidence suggests that once you introduce an extender into the mix, the wheels (err AF and IQ) fall off quite rapidly. Also, the dynamic range means I can really punish highlights/shadows without it turning into a mess of noise and murkiness. I previously owned a 1D4, and once you get into some bad lighting conditions and start to push highlights/shadows.. you just don't bother. You tend to want to make images darker to hide the mess of shadows.

I just love the details/sharpness i get from 1000mm. I'm really not that interested in taking underside images of planes and I find most dynamic images are from loops, rolls, etc when the canopy is up and you can see the pilot.. I want to fill 2/3rds of my sensor of plane, so that when I crop it, I literally push the sharpness sliders all the way to the right so that it oversharpens the image. However, once you downscale a 5000px/4000px image to 2000.. 1600px, the contrast between the pixels really shows, hence the sharpness. It's effectively supersampling an image.. not too dissimilar to Nvidia's DSR technology.

Yes that does help. Thanks for the informative post, I appreciate your comments.

I'm placing the 100-400 II on my "buy" list. I already have the 1.4xIII.

Just keep in mind that using an extender on a full frame will yield significantly different results on a crop body. I read somewhere that the AF was 9 out 10 keepers on a 5d4/dx2 as opposed to a crop/7d2 which was a 4 in 10.

From 2009. Certainly not a great shot (40D and 70-200), no prop blur. I guess I had my camera set up for jets. I only post this because it was an interesting collection of aircraft.
