Hey guys. I'm hoping to get some advice. I have a Canon 6d and the 50mm 1.8 lens. My first love has always been street photography, but I've been falling more in love with taking portraits. I want to get the Sigma 35mm art lens, as that's a great all around walk around lens and for portraits, but its way out of my budget right now.

My question is tho. Will this be a good companion lens to my my 50mm 1.8? Also can I use the 85mm for more than portraits like full body shots? Thanks in advance guys.

Hi JC32,

I don't own the Sigma 35mm art lens. However I have read on this and other forums, that that lens is a great companion to the 50 and 85mm. Also the 135mm. I own the Canon 85mm f1.8, and have used that on both my Canon 6D and my trust 40D (making it like a 135mm). And I have definitely used both for full body shots, particularly outside while camping, trekking, hiking, and for family gatherings. Recently I purchased the Canon 135mm f2 and am in love with that lens. Photographers often say, "use your feet" for primes. Could not agree more :)!

At first I was going to say "no" to your question. I have one (used with 5D and EOS M3) and I rarely use it. Then I looked at your flickr page and seen how many portraits you have.

So I am going to change my mind and say "yes" to the question. With the longer focal length, you give your subjects a little more breathing room where you are not standing so close to them.

Maybe consider renting or borrowing one for a weekend to see if you like the focal length of the lens.

Good luck.

Gart

You can certainly use this lens for full body portraits. That might be it's best use. The only caveat is try a 135L before you decide, it seems to be dropping in price recently.

It will be a good companion for your 50mm f/1.8. I have a similar set up myself. The 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens, especially considering the price! For me, it is exactly what I wanted, but you must consider the focal length: 85mm is quite close to 50mm. You might be better served by the similarly priced EF 100mm f/2. The EF 100mm f/2 is apparently optically very similar to the EF 85mm f/1.8. I haven't tried it myself, but it has a similar reputation to the 85mm f/1.8 USM.

If you have a bit of extra cash, but you're not looking to break the bank, the other lens to consider is the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC USD. It is a similarly performing lens, according to the reviews I've read, but it adds VC, Tamron's designation for image stabilization. I haven't used this lens either, but it is one to consider.

I like the 85mm f/1.8 USM. It's quick focusing, sharp, and has very decent image quality. It's not the best portrait lens around, but it's very good for the cost.

"Zeus," our daughter and son-in-law's adopted dog arrived with a broken leg, but not heart. Now all healed and romping with the other dogs, he has worked his way into our extended family's hearts and arms. Resilient and resonant with love :)! (EXIF data gone, but I can report: Canon 6D with a Canon 85mm 1.8 lens, Christmas Eve!)
