My favourite cheap lens is the Canon EF 24-85 F3.5-4.5 USM
I have the gold finish version, and they sell second hand for about £100 on Ebay.
The USM motor is fast and silent, and the image quality is excellent.

What would be a worthwhile upgrade to this on a 70D crop sensor?

The 24-85 F3.5-4.5 USM Gold ring, metal mount is an excellent lens. Maybe a wide angle lens would do you good in your landscape photos.

Thanks Copper for your suggestion. I have the Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6, which I really like.

I've posted these before in the Soviet lens sample thread, but this lens absolutely qualifies as a "cheap" lens. The Helios 58mm prime was one of the most mass produced lenses ever made and are readily available from ebay sellers for less than 50 bucks. I think I paid around $36 for my 44-2. An inexpensive adapter is all you need depending on your system and the mount of the lens (in my case M42 - Canon EF). Manual focus and aperture, but so much fun to experiment with given the unique bokeh effects it can produce from creamy blur up close to the well known "swirly" bokeh at that sweet spot longer distance to background. Anyone looking to experiment with an adapted MF lens should pick one of these up. The earlier versions (M44, 44-2, 44-3) tended to be the ones that produced the swirly bokeh more easily. The later versions (44-6, 44-7) tended to be sharper and didn't produce the funky bokeh as easily as the early versions.

That's a cracking lens. I let my son have mine when he bought his first DSLR, and I miss it. A great walk-around lens for holidays & casual use.

It really is an under appreciated lens for a crop sensor. It gets lost once the better glass bug bites, but I've taken many, many good shots with this lens.
