In fact, it is upside down. You can tell by looking for the true legs which, in this case, are the small, amber-coloured ones towards the bottom of the shot (plus the other three as silhouettes). They are at the front, behind the head. It's hanging on by just one proleg, which are the ones with the grippability. A bit of entomological trivia.

I would guess that it is a moth larva, but have you managed to ID it?

The caterpillar is a White Cedar Moth (Leptocneria reducta).
