You can't have an 'instant classic'. That's a contradiction in terms. For any piece of equipment to attain 'classic' status is surely going to take a measure of years.

But it's great that you are enjoying this lens and that you are producing some good work.

Comment and (constructive) criticism always welcome.

not for this lens. It is the best portrait lens Canon has ever produced and quite possibly among other manufacturers as well. This makes it an instant classic, no need to wait years for it. It is beyond what 85Lii could ever offer, it is MUCH better than Sony GM 85 1.4. There is something about the way 85IS captures colors that can be pushed in LR/PS like no other lens I’ve used. It is miles ahead of 135L and the only Canon lens that can compete is 200L but it’s impractical for 99% of shooting.
The addition of IS makes it the king of portrait lenses and a must have for any hybrid shooter. I am sure we will be hearing a lot more about this lens in the coming years as more people get to use it.
Yes, there are also Sigma 85 art and Sigma 105 Art, both are needlessly large and heavy and much less appealing to canon shooters. The rendering and consistent AF will always be more important than pixel level sharpness.

I know it isn’t a direct competitor, but how would you say it fares against the 100L when used for portraits at 2.8? I’m thinking of selling my 100L and 50 ART, both of which I rarely use, to fund the new 85L.
