Thanks for the info. I have since read that introduced red deer have been competing for the Takahe's food, but are being culled to allow the vegetation to recover. What with them, stoats, cats and dogs, all introduced by humans - not to mention humans ourselves - what chance did the flightless birds like this one and the gentle Kakapo, for example, stand? :-( Talking of which : did you see a Kakapo?

Yeah. Introduced mammals are a scourge in NZ. The English introduced rabbits which promptly bred like, well, rabbits, so they then introduced stoats to control them, but the stoats proceeded to decimate the local birds - as do the wombats introduced from Australia. NZ is the only place where I've been perfectly happy to see squished animals on the roads as there are no mammals that are native to NZ. In almost every forest we visited we saw animal traps baited with poison and warnings to that effect, so the locals are trying very hard to help the birds - but it's an uphill battle. Alas we didn't see a Kakapo as they are confined to islands we didn't visit. The famous Sirocco is paraded around the mainlands as an ambassador for conservation, but the nearest we got to him were a few "Sirocco was here" type signs!

Excellent! One of my favorite warblers but so far this year they seem to be no shows.
