2nd weekend in a row at Assateague Island. This place is birding paradise.

Please excuse the iPhone postings..

My first ever Baltimore Oriole. I was awe struck by how bright his plumage was.. it was if he was a burning ember atop the tree when the morning sun first lit him.

Matt, both birds are stunners, and I adore your burning ember description.....but that grosbeak floats my boat, that is a seriously lovely image for me. The colour and light and detail of the brid compliments the bkg so well, cracking mate, loved seeing this. I don't actually know of either bird species, what a cool way to be educated huh;-)a

There will be days when you get the shot(s) you missed days, months or years before.

Stu,

Profound compliments, thank you very much!

The morning light is just buttery, and if you’re lucky enough to have a brilliantly colored bird pose for you in said light, it’s a rare day indeed.

It’s going to be deflating going back to my regular stomping ground, as this place is just teaming with “exotic” species that seem to beg to be photographed :p

This is from later in the day, so light not anywhere near as nice... a Female Orchard Oriole:

Wow, what a gorgeous bird. Check out that feather coloring... You’ve made me a fan too, Ted.

Thanks, I live in the Mojave desert, most of the animals here are not very colorful. My brother is trying to convince me to move up north, he has lots of animals I would like at his Wyoming place.

Nice shots, but is there something wrong with its left eye? The right one in the first shot looks different...

Yes which is why I had trouble identifying it in earlier postings. Initially I only got shots of it's left side and I thought it was just an orange patch. This is the first shot I ever took of it and you can see how it's eye could lead to confusion over ID. I think it may just have scratched it on a branch or similar

You don't have to spend a fortune to get great results. It's wise money spent.

I've been admiring the snowy owl images here for the last several years. I heard about one that was in my area this winter near a highway and was finally able to get a good photo of it. It was perched on a sign and the image is crooked, but I will take it as a first for me.
