Heya,

A simple evening with the girls. The phlox are blooming crazy in the field, along with some black eye susans in a local ditch (seriously... lol). Took the small, simple Fuji kit and a flash in a beauty dish. Light and fast. Mom was assistant with the light. We ran to a ditch with the yellow flowers, a ditch literally, then back to our field with the phlox. Probably about 45 minutes of running around. The squirt was a champ and played ball. We have an agreemtn, some fun goofy shots, and some less goofy shots, and she did a good job listening and following commands. And mom did a great job holding the dish in pretty good spots.

Setup:

Camera: Fuji X-T1 (ISO 200, Mode AV, EC -0.7)
Lens: Rokinon 50mm F1.2 (all shots at F1.2); fully manual lens (focus peaking)
Filter: Hoya 3 stop ND (need this due to F1.2 and base ISO 200, 1/4000s mechanical shutter isn't enough on its own in some shots and would have needed to be 1/32000s!)
Flash: Flashpoint R2 TTL Zoom LiOn (love this flash, it pops full power non stop on the same charge forever)
Transceiver: R2 (set to -0.7 EC)
Modifier: PhotoSel 28" Beauty Dish (love this thing, its all metal, simple)

The combination of the speedlight and the 28" beauty dish allows for pretty good fill even in direct hard sun, can't block down the sun, but can at least fill up and match it in some cases. I really started preferring this, as much as I enjoy my 600ws strobe, it's heavy and moving it around on a boom in a ditch with a big modifier is tough and it doesn't have TTL. When it comes to kids like this, I really, really like TTL. No fussing with settings. I spend all the time posing and shooting. Not fussing with settings and gear. I really enjoy that side of things.

the umbrella is a bit heavy for the light stand (i usually use a lighter version of this one. this is for a boom) and i didnt want a) it falling over on its own
b) getting bumped and moved out of position
c) getting knocked over by the insufferable snot-gobblers that were running around virtually unchecked...

The dog is Joey who is an AKC Champion Maltese...

Lighting is a pair of White Lightning WL500 ("coffee can") units. One on a boom fired into an umbrella and one from camera left on a stand also fired into an umbrella. Background is a length of black velvet supported by a inverted "U" shaped PVC pipe and covering a coffee table. The white stuffed bear is the stand-in for my white dogs to get the lighting right before I bring the dog out, My wife stands behind the velvet and controls the dog with a thin black show lead which I will clone out, if necessary. My camera is a Canon DSLR and I will use a long lens. I started with a Canon 10D and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Now I shoot with a Canon 6D Mark 2 and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens. I trigger the flash with an infrared Ying-Yang trigger which cost less than twenty bucks but has not failed me in many years of shooting. I shoot hand held and my normal exposure averages around 1/60 second (the sync speed for the old WL500 units) at f/5.6 or f/8. The red upholstered couch is a doll's furniture couch. By the way, I paid $50 each for these lights over 20-years ago and pro-rated, they have cost me pennies a week. They are like the Energizer Bunny - they just keep going and going

Nice work!

Wonderful pics of the dog. Great job for sure.

I use a thin leash to control some (people) models. Some have too much energy and that brings them back to the shoot!
