Another Blue Jay pic! Of course, while I'm sitting here posting this my cardinals, downy and hairy woodpeckers and a starling (haven't seen one around for a year or so) are making an appearance. Maybe I'll get them tomorrow before the rain hits.
We had my favorite weather for shooting in the backyard today...bright overcast in the open shade. It's like shooting with an enormous softbox.

I drove down to Quintana Neotropical Reserve on the Upper Texas Coast yesterday, for my final warbler trip of 2018. Lots of birders in that tiny refuge and also some very nice birds. It was partly cloudy with some very dark conditions around the water features, but I shot away. Many of the birds were unafraid and very close, so I stopped down a bit to gain some DOF. The photog I was sharing a blind with saw a bird bathing and called a Chestnut-sided Warbler. It was so dark, I could barely find it in the viewfinder and most of my images were motion blurred. This one (handheld), I am quite pleased with. Not a lifer but only my third Bay-breasted Warbler, slightly cropped:

While I was photographing a very close Hooded Warbler, an Ovenbird wandered out onto the path, about 15 meters distant. This is cropped a bit, nice to see one of these, out in the open.

I want to post two more images from my final Quintana trip. This Hooded Warbler was so close, I had to back up to get to MFD, about 11'. He filled the viewfinder. I like this image the best of the several I took of this fearless little bird, he drew quite a crowd.

This is the most beautiful female Rose-breasted Grosbeak I have ever seen, she was close and unafraid, slight crop. I also photographed a brilliant male, but I like this lady, even better.

Very nice.

It seems there are very nice bird photography opportunities in Texas. I've been to Florida often, but never taken the opportunity in Texas. I'm wondering how the places compare.

Great shot. I'm guessing you must have put in some time and planning to get it.

Got to love these males. They hardly look real.

Oh wow! I'm just in awe. There's no way I'll ever achieve this sort of quality.
