seems like the f/1,4L retains some of the signature "magic" that the f/1,2L render....

The background blur is really smooth in the first one.

Beg to differ. I think the blur on the second image is actually quite rough and uneasy on the eye.

Well that's a matter of opinion.
I owned the 85mm 1.2 l ii and once I noticed mirror box clipping on specular highlights I could no longer not see it.

I have not seen the phenomenon with 85 1.4 L and am pleased with that.

I think this photo was shot in bright daylight with flash so it affected the bokeh. In general, bokeh of 85IS is actually nicer than 85ii which exhibits nervousness outside of central area in full body portraits. Regardless, I often add additional lens blur in PS so it’s all correctable.

I agree, it's a matter of opinion ... and my opinion is that the bokeh in the second image is not attractive at all.

But I'm not judging the lens on this and I'm not trying to make a spurious comparison with the "I really don't know what you might have got" bokeh from another lens.

I'm just saying ... that's not nice bokeh.

I'm impressed with the AF on this lens, This image is of my dog Running at me full speed. I shot it at F1.6 and nailed his eye in focus

Traded the 1.2L II for the 1.4L IS as I needed faster focusing. Absolutely no regrets.

That's great to hear. Did you look at the Sigma 1.4 as an option as well?
