My first time at Huntington beach pier, and was blessed with flames in the sky. Handheld FE 35 f2.8. Kind of wish I was prepared with a tamron 28-75 or something :-P

oh yeah, and a tripod and a patient wife would have helped, she was asking me to leave right BEFORE the burn, which I suspected might happen.

West coast sunsets are killers, nice job Charlie being hand held

thanks, at slow shutter speeds, IBIS can be wonky, one side soft, other sharp. Had to merge two images, not a big deal as they were consecutive

there's a 10 minute lapse where the sun was down, and no glow was happening.... and then it happened. As photographers, we wait for that glow rather than pack up...... that's why I absolutely dread having my wife and kids around when these things happen. We had only been there for 30 minutes or so, any sort of darkness, and she throws in the towel.

stupid record button on the R3, so many times I missed out the recording because I thought I pressed it. Gotta order some sort of stub, because I did a long video recording of the sunset just to find out, it's not on my memory card............... either that or I'll see if I can program the shutter button to record the way I want it....

Firstly, love the colours in the sky. Totally agree on the family front, earlier this year I took a trip to the Mach Loop in Wales ( a widely used fast jet training area) in the hope of some decent shots, anyway after an hour sitting around 600ft up a mountain, the family were restless and we ended climbing back down. Just as we got back to the car, 2 RAF Hawks when screaming past at about 400ft!

For those who don’t know the area here’s a link

damn, that's awesome and sad, would love to have that video footage + panning shots.

Even though I didnt have a tripod, I got enough sharp shots from many tries. Sometimes DOF wasnt enough, but pretty happy with the results regardless.

My wife talks about going to iceland and travel a lot, every time she mentions taking the trip for my photography, I answer no thanks ;-)a

it just doesnt mix, and I dont even try. No matter how much I try to explain that the burn comes after a bit.... it dont matter, sun already set, I should have been done.... Total joke.

Speaking of the "little guy", the RX100ii is in the wife's purse a majority of the time--but I need to re-steal it back. Now that I don't have a small body to take "everywhere" now, it is time to go back to the little Sony.

It has come in really handy in Vegas, when either I can't take a detachable lens camera into a show with me or I just feel like pressing the easy button.

Billy Idol, House of Blues at Mandalay Bay. Massive Crop, but I dig the imperfections.

Frankie Moreno Show at Golden Nugget. He's the most entertaining piano player I've ever seen--a modern-day Jerry Lee Lewis on the ivories.

The wife at Golden Steer Steakhouse, which is one of the last Rat Pack hangouts still standing.

A few questions for everyone here.

I've read that the electronic shutter is bad for long exposures. What happens if you use it for one? Does it affect IQ or damage the sensor?

I've also read it effects bokeh at faster shutter speeds. Does everyone switch to mechanical once they go faster than 1/500th?

that was the case with older R2, it drops to 12 bit, but afaik, when using uncompressed or single shot? the E-shutter does 14 bits. Pretty much all of my landscapes on the R3 has been E-shutter. Generally, all of my shots are E-shutter, very seldom do I switch to mechanical. Mostly for flash. Not entirely sure the 7iii is built the same.

I'm still not sure about the bokeh effect on the R3, but I occasionally turn off E-shutter when I'm shooting harsh light and a fast prime wide open. I no longer mess with EFCS, it's either E-shutter 95% of the time, or mechanical shutter.

Thanks for clarifying that Charlie. I did a long exposure the other day and pretty sure I forgot to disable eshutter so was freaking out then haha.

I also get my Sony 85mm f/1.8 today so when I get the chance I'll do some tests at fast shutter speeds with eshutter and mechanical to see the difference.

I will say silent shutter is amazing and will be great for street photography.

it's friggin amazing indeed. it does have some rolling shutter issue at times, and possibility of banding. The R2 would band in many scenarios, but the R3 had minor tweaks that made it very band resistant. Do you have any banding issues with the 7iii?

I'm sure you'll love the FE 85, it'll have no issue taxing your sensor, it's pretty darn sharp even on a high MP body.

It was funny when I used it because after the 5th shot my girlfriend asked when I was going to hurry up and take the photo :p I haven't used mine extensively yet but I haven't had any banding issues. I tried the eshutter in quite poor artificial lighting and didn't notice any issues.

Yeah from everything I've seen it can almost rival the GM. I can easily survive on a 35/85 combo.
