Heading to Maui and the Big Island for the first time for 14 days in early-mid April four our (belated) honeymoon. One week on each island and two days on the Big Island staying in Volcano. Wife and I are planning on hiking, biking the crater, road to Hana, luau, general exploring of the islands, and doing all the touristy stuff and eating all the food. Maybe we will find a day or two to just sit on a beach too :)

I've got a Canon 70D with EF-S 17-55 and EF 70-300L. Any reason to bring anything else? My wife doesn't particularly like to model so I'm not sure if I'll be needing a flash. I've also rented an EF-S 10-22 in the past and had fun with it, but that was in old European cities, not sure if I'll need it in HI.

On Maui eat at Mama's Fish House, a little expensive but worth it. The menu is made from what is caught that day, listing who caught it and where. Reservations are a must. https://www.mamasfishhouse.com (external link)

Live on Oahu. Will second the ultra wide. It seems like I only want ultra wide out here about 99% for my landscapes. Don't regret a great trip!

Had a 6D....
Then had a daughter....
Now have an SL2 and Mavic Pro.... Man life changes.
I would encourage you... To just go for it.

Thanks for the tips on the UW everyone. My wife said I can outright buy a used Canon 10-22 (or Canon 10-18, or Tokina 11-20...) as long as I process the vacation photos in a timely manner... we still have photos from Spain from 2016 that I haven't shared yet...!

As for Momma's Fish House, it is definitely on the list. One of the nice things about living in a high cost of living area (DC) is that there is less sticker shock when traveling!

Yes. Shaved ice is a definite must in Hawaii. I believe it started in Kona. Then it caught on big in Oahu. We have a shaved ice place by us and it's awesome.

Sunrise at Lanikai Beach. Long Exposure using a Breakthrough Photography ND filter. One of the highlights of our trip for sure was that morning taking in the beauty and then hiking Pillbox. We were fortunate as they closed the trail a few days later and didn't even know it was closing.

Here's a view of the Kilauea eruption from my neighborhood. Seeing this and hearing the lava bomb explosions every night for the past couple weeks gives me goosebumps.

Thanks for sharing, Kilauea has fascinated me most of my life. I should have pursued a different career path so I could have spent my life following the volcano.

How far away is it from there? At least if the trades blow you are safe.

I prefer Pachelbels lesser known work, Canon in L and the 99 cent menu club.

I’m about 15 miles north of the eruption. The trades have been blowing in the southwestern direction since the eruption so I consider myself lucky to have not been negatively affected yet.

15 miles is a good distance to be, better get some masks for the days the Trades stop. Be safe and take care.
Going there for the 4th of July for Lava and Laulau
