What was up with my thread?

Until the product is actually announced it is considered a rumor and should stay in the rumors forum.

No big deal, seems to happen fairly often.

Oh!
I didn't realise there was a rumours section.

Used prices have already dropped to 16.50 on the news. I'd be glad to help you out and give you 20 bucks for your copy.

I'm curious too see how they make this 2.8 lens better than the version 2.

Phoenixkh wrote in post #18626934 (external link)
... I guess they could reduce the weight some, but as far as the lens itself? I'm with you. It's already great.

mcoren wrote in post #18626952 (external link)
... Tweak the existing design a bit, maybe improve the coatings or make the IS half a stop better, and a lot of people who might think of buying a used v2 will instead buy a new v3 so they have the latest and greatest.

I will be curious to see how it would be possible to improve on the current lenses.

Centre sharpness can be improved to match or better the Nikon E. Edge sharpness can be improved a lot too.

I think the AF system will be Nanosonic to better accommodate video focus. Add some Slightly better coatings, 0.25 stops of IS, and a claimed 7% faster AF acquisition. Boom, $3k lens.

And I agree that it will prolly have the new 100-400 tripod foot.

EDIT: and it will be white instead of off-white. All of this is worth $3k... right?

One thing I don't like about the current versions of these lenses is that the zoom ring is close to the body, which makes it harder to hold steady while panning and zooming for action shooting because your hands are close together and there's more weight outside of them. In contrast, the Canon 100-400 v2, for example, has the zoom ring at the outside end of the lens, so it's much easier to hold steady due to the additional separation between hands, and most of the weight is between hands. I hope they change this on the new lenses.

I hope it comes with the window like the 100-400mm on the hood.
It would be better it comes in metal!

http://www.canonrumors.com …d-ef-70-200mm-f-4l-is-ii/ (external link)

prelim specs:

EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM – Key Features:
Flexible 70-200mm zoom range
Fixed maximum aperture f/4
Ring-shaped USM focus
Image stabilizer in 5 steps
Lightweight, weighs only 780 g

EF 70-200mm f / 2.8L IS III USM – Key Features:
Flexible 70-200mm zoom range
Fixed maximum aperture f/2.8
Ring-shaped USM focus
Image stabilizer in 3.5 steps
Durable weatherproof construction

Price:
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM: 14,990 SEK ($1700 USD)
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM: 24,630 SEK ($2800 USD)

Sales start:
EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM: June 2018
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM: August 2018

a few notes from me:
- I really hope there is more to it than these spec sheets indicate. The IQ better be flat out PHENOMENAL (instantly noticeably better) if that's how they are planning on enticing people to upgrade.
- 780g is 20g heavier than the current version; I was hoping for lighter.
- also... I hope they translated the article wrong and the IS on the f/2.8 is 3 modes, 5 stops. If it really is only 3.5 stops then Canon just messed up!

Interesting. The picture of the f/4 lens shows it with a tripod collar. Is that going to be included as standard (finally)? Does the extra 20g include that?
