Wikipedia says chipmunks usually forage on the ground but will climb trees to get nuts and acorns. Maybe you just need to go where the trees with tasty seeds are.

PRONOUN ADVISORY: OhLook is a she. | A FEW CORRECT SPELLINGS: lens, aperture, amateur, hobbyist, per se, raccoon, whoa | Comments welcome

Around here they can even climb the wire that supports the bird feeder.

I have the big Squirrels do stuff like that. I had to prune a lot of branches on the tree the bird feeder was on, I watched a Squirrel climb up to the feeder, open the top and then climb inside and stuff its face.

Yours look like a cross between a (California) ground squirrel and a chipmunk. I wonder if that may have something to do with them not climbing trees?

I did some research and it seems these are probably White-Tailed Antelope Squirrels and they are also known as Antelope Chipmunks. They are really tiny, not counting the tail maybe 4 inches long.
