It not only could work but has been done, but you need a very large drone to do that safely. However, plenty of people use a drone when fishing from shore to bring their line out really far. The downside is you then have to reel all that line back in, and if you get a fish on the line a mile out you're going to be cursing your drone as your arms turn to jello.

Above the tree tops of a jarrah forrest in the south west of Western Australia. Observation deck from years ago for forrest fires. Tree is about 51 meters high.

15+/- minutes. But I always bring it back when the 30% battery level warning starts going off. I usually land with 20-25% battery left.

I shot this earlier in the week after we finished diving a couple shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Michigan. I wanted the boat and the Chicago skyline in the shot and got it.
