Vinz, can you not just increase the shutter speed to kill ambient? Why f/11?

Edit - or is it for dof?

I’ve been pleased with my tr685f with Fuji. Just recently with my A7iii with v860iis I was outdoors shooting my daughters class field trip and had misfires a good 8 consecutive shots!!!! with fully charged lithium battery. I really dislike the Sony hot shoe design and godox foot.
Since Sony is not my primary system I’m not stressing. I may pickup another v860ii for redundancy.

I am not resistant to adaptation to other manufacturers. Personally I prefer mirrored heavier bodies as I never ever fear missing pivotal moments regardless of low light. Oddly you hear on Fred Miranda forum members openly admit they have AF hiccups with A7Riii and other Sony bodies compared to their mirrored wedding setup camera bodies.

I will say it is not a wise choice to use adapted canon lenses for wedding work. I tested my A7iii with 24lLmk2, 35f2, 24-70 2.8mk2 and I threw it in my gear bag in disgust using it in a poorly lit reception in a Chinese restaurant. My 5d4 and 5d3 was my rockstar saviour! The sony did not work as I hoped. Mind you I was using adapted glass. For casual stuff the mc-11 and canon glass works well for non stressful photography.

I guess I must spend 10k to 12k on gmaster glass for a simple basic kit for native glass. For now my Sony is just a fun mirrorless camera set up just like my Fuji system.

Ceremonies typically are brightly lit so red focus assist beam is not noticeable imo. I understand we all have different methods and shooting style.

I do find that there is quite a noticeable difference in how the photos will look if you shoot and event with a Canon body and a Sony body. This is one reason why I rather shoot with two of the same manufacturer cameras . I’m still struggling to make my Sony files look similar to my Canon post processing work flow. Also it’s easier for me to use the same system as I can use remote trigger flashes during the reception seamlessly and effortlessly .

Why do you feel you ‘must’ need g master lenses to make the Sony work?

It seems Sony might not be for you - too much contrast, too much sharpness, issues with colour science, misfires with flash

I wanna shoot this at F11 but the 85GM can't focus. All the lights in the room were shut, the only lights for me to grab focus is the modeling light coming from the AD600

What should I do to be able to grab focus at F11? Manual?

3 lights setup.
- a hint of light to the background was a bare speedlight(V860II)
- main light was the AD600(with 36" gridded stripbox - double diffuser)
- fill light was the AD200 with the same modifier as the main light

Is live-view set to on Vinz? If so, camera will focus at F11...so no PDAF, and less light to focus with.

For studio shooting, you'll want to set live view to off, so the camera will open the aperture while focusing

Because AF sensitivity with adapted lenses takes a hit, which is a fair point for wedding photography.

FWIW I shot a couple weddings with the 24-70II on the a9 and it worked really well….But it struggles on the a7rII and a7rIII in low light so I finally sold it. Not sure about the a7III though.

There are plenty of affordable native lenses that can be used to shoot weddings, so I wouldn’t say you that GM lenses are a necessity. I actually sold both the 24-70GM and 70-200GM because I prefer a pair of primes on two bodies vs zooms for weddings. 35mm/85mm combo covers most weddings for me, and there are lots of affordable options at those two focal lengths, including Sigma ART glass (FE mount or adapted via MC-11). For those who do need a standard zoom, the Tamron 28-75 looks to be a very attractive alternative to the GM at a fraction of the price.

oh that i forgot, i was on liveview but i thought the camera will turn off liveview automatically when we use strobe. that's what i remember with the R2. i gotta double check this.

Yeah it doesn't automatically switch when you attach a light. I have to go in and switch it off when I attach a light.

I think it at one point live view used to turn off when you attached a speedlight and there was no way to turn it back on, and that this was corrected via firmware.

Since I shoot multiple systems I'm open to what it offers me. I am not the sort that becomes a fan boy hiding deficiencies in camera system simply due to monetary investment.

Sony works for me but not for my events photography. I do appreciate the high iso performance and small form factor for my casual application. I'll eventually consider using it for non run/gun application.

So far I see nothing in the UWA f/2.8 zoom offerings but the GMaster 16-35 f/2.8. Tamron 28-75mm is a consideration but it's 28mm and not 24mm. My stellar Canon 24-70L f/2.8mk2 isn't good enough for what I want in a zoom range adapted to my A7iii. 70-200 range there's no alternative really but to buy the native GMaster 70-200 f/2.8 as f/4 is something I really do not consider. For Primes I can wait for Sigma but the slower glass Batis 25 f/2 and cheaper Sony 85 f/1.8 would be great to own.

"It seems Sony might not be for you - too much contrast, too much sharpness, issues with colour science, misfires with flash"

Everything you've stated can almost be all changed in lightroom. This is work in progress to learn how to achieve faster workflow in Post using Sony files that I'm adapting too.

Not sure what's going on with the cheap godox flash. I think it's something I have to investigate more thoroughly.

As far as AF...... the jury is still in because I have not purchased Sony native glass. However I have enough friends now shooting both mirrored (canon/Nikon) that openly admit their A9, A7Riii do not match in low light AF performance.

Sony works for me as much as it works for others. I'm not forced to shoot Sony as it's just another tool in my bag. Nothing ventured ....nothing gained and so far I'm having an adventure with Sony.

Is your Godox trigger up to date with the latest firmware?

Like you I can live with any shortfalls in the Sony system, I’m certainly not a fan boy. I came from canon and found that the Sony just gave me so much more in terms of tech, IQ and size. I’m a hobby photographer so a lot of the stuff that bothers others doesn’t bother me, as long as I can get lasting memories of my family I’m happy.

The lack of a 35/2 or 35/1.8, that does bother me!...
