Canon EOS M50

Question: Does my M50 have firmware update capability? I do not notice anything related in the manual. If so, is it usual for Canon to update (downloadable) camera firmware periodically? Thanks for any related info.

yes, via SD card. Canon rarely updates firmware on lower end bodies unless there is some new accessory or lens comes out that requires firmware update.

M50’s AF via EVF is much better than 5div which covers mostly central area and it is much slower to change focus point via joystic vs touch and drag throughout most of the screen. In comparison to a6500, M50 is much more fun to use with way better LCD, touchscreen and overall ergonomics/buttons and video AF usability. Eye AF is actually clever, only works at close distances where it actually matters reverting to face detect when eyeAF makes no sense. M50 really showcases how obsolete 5div technology is. I can’t wait for Canon to release a full frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, I see no more future for dslrs with extremely limited focus points and information available via OVF, inferior exposure compared to liveview.

I agree with all that, although when using the 5D4 in Live view mode it beats the M50 using the LCD hands down, others than less AF area.

I loved what my old A6000 offered but found it very frustrating to actualy use, it seemed too fiddly and not user friendly. Although the M50 is cut down with less dials etc, i find it has just enough to get the job done.

5d’s little brother. Both have 35mm perspective lens with f2. I am still evaluating whether it can replace 5div+35mm as my most used combo for casual use and travel.

Ive not touched my 5D4 since getting my M50. I’m not saying its as good as the 5D4, but its good enough as a daily camera, and much less hassle to carry around.

I am gonna be using it exclusively for the next couple of weeks to get a feel for it especially in lower light. It is very fun to use. I was shooting in bright sunny conditons today and EVF with articulating screen flipped to the left while doing touch & drag was impressive. Both LCD and EVF are super accurate in terms of exposure, brightness and colors. The main issue is that 22mm is not stabilized for video and digital IS is unusable, I had some ruined footage because of it (weird jitter in parts) but at least it’s quiet so I don’t have to use external mic unlike 35mm f2 on 5div. M50’s 4k video is so much better than its 1080p footage, absense of dpaf is probably its major letdown, I am fine with crop. I am able to get by with pre-focus and then MF/Focus peaking for 4k - it works very well for static scenes or with large DoF like 11-22mm IS lens. Speaking of which 11-22mm is great and IS is very effective for video, it’s just not for low light.

Ive made a decision to only use my M50 for a month at least, and ive not missed my 5D4 at all. Even for situations where i would normally take my 5D4 the M50 has done well. I do miss the narrow DOF I’m more used to, especially as I’m mostly using my 18-135 and not my faster lenses, but I want to get used to the M50 before i go on holiday.
I’m noticing a few odd things about its behaviour, so I want to get my head around those asap. They are negatives, just not how i would expect things to go based on my other Canon bodies.

I really like the crop factor in 4K, it means i dont have to worry about using longer lenses for video. I’m not really a WA person, although i do have the 11-22.
I agree, its a shame the 22 f/2 isn’t stabilised. For this reason I don’t think ill get it, as i love my 35 f/2 IS quite a bit and although this lens is longer, 22mm is a bit too wide for me to want to use.

Ive just traded my 135L in and hoping to get the 18-150 as a holiday lens in the next week or so. I know its not a fantastic lens, but it looks like an ideal partner for the M50 if traveling light. It won’t get much use other than holidays though, as my 18-135 USM Nano really is my fav lens on this camera. AF is so much faster than STM, and i do notice the difference when using my 11-22 or STM primes. I’m just hoping its IQ will be close to the 18-135 USM Nano or i might end up just taking the 18-135 away with me.

I did miss a little bit the ability to do more than three shots for HDR, but soon got over that, as don't play with that all that much.

Does Lightroom 6 recognise the RAW files? That is probably the only thing holding me back now.

And does it take the same battery as the M5?

Thanks - I'll take a look. Going off it now though ... in NZ and still pricey.

So I am going for this lot, any overkill with the lenses? What are peoples thoughts on the 150mm compared to the 200mm lens, apart from focal length and apetture?

I'm having a devil of a time searching for just the right answer about the silent shutter mode.

For those who have the camera: Can the shutter be 100% silent or just really quiet?

I need 100%.

I currently have a 6D and the "silent" mode is not silent at all (although it's not that bad).

But I'll be working on an amateur film set and need 100% quiet during actual takes. The lighting will be excellent, so I don't have to worry much about that. I just need something to use during the actual scenes that makes zero sound.

Why Canon? My lens collection.

100% silent but it only works as a an automatic scene preset (must turn dial) you can’t change any settings so it’s mosty useless.

Oh, man. That's not good.

What about focus. Can I at least have that set for center? Each scene won't last long, but I do need silent for a few shots here and there.

Does it choose everything? Even ISO?

I beleive focus you can still select but not aperture or shutter speed. ISO - I’ll take a look tonight, most likely not.
