Ok ok ... its been quite a looooooooong time since i had 40D :) and i do remember that ISO 1600 was noiiiisy and ISO 3200 was well ... explosive noisy mess. Keep in mind that noise reduction in programs has got better quite a lot in mean time as well. :)

Expose properly, especially ETTR, and noise reduction didn't have to be elaborate.
