Rugby is tough WARNING Blood !
Taken this Saturday, poor lighting at this field as the ambient light faded but the overheads had not yet kicked in.
Canon 7dMkll ISO 6400, 1/1000 f2.8
went with the black and white to tone down the claret a bit, and imply a bit of old school newspaper feel to it.
C&Cwelcome
This guy was laughing with the trainer all the way off the field, would have required a bit of needlework to close that up !
Mods feel free to delete if this is "too much" in an image.

Just part of the game shanky  on a lighter note, I've been invited to shoot the ladies county final at twickers this Sunday by the local regional development officer. I'll have to hide in the stands till the senior men play and hope no one realises im still there...;-)a

My sons and I had a great weekend. My eldest was called up to the school 1st XV and my youngest was called up to the U14 A team while I got to shoot their games with my early Christmas present - the 1Dx mkii.

This body is unbelievable to shoot sports with. I ended up with about triple the files that I usually get so a lot more post than I'm used to but I am definitely in love with this camera.

Some images of my eldest first

What lens do you prefer on the 1dxii? 500 or 100-400

I shoot with a 1dx and a 7dii and then I play around with 300f2.8 + 2xiii and 70-200f2.8
Sometimes I put the 300 on the 1dx and the 70-200 on the 7d2 but It doubles up the focal length a bit so then I throw the 2xiii on to the 300 + 1dx which works quite well but I lose a bit of IQ (not too much)
other times I use the 70-200 on the 1dx and the 300 on the 7d2

If only there was a 70-500 f2.8 :D

Based only on the lens, I'd choose the 500 over the 100-400. If i need to be mobile then I find the 500 too big and heavy. I'm happy to handhold the 500 when I'm shooting wildlife but it’s way too much for rugby. The af and iq is way better as well on the 500. My set up going forward will be the 500 on my 1dxii and my 70-200 f2.8 on my 5div. If i need to be mobile and can only take one body, then I’d use the 100-400.

From the kit you described, I,d probably put the 300 on the 7dii and the 70-200 on the 1dx. I personally don't like using extenders for sports purely because of the slower af. The 300 on the 7d should be fine from between both 22’s and the 70-200 will be great inside of the 22 with that setup, assuming you shoot from behind the dead ball line - just my ten cents worth!

Imagine the size a 70-500 2.8 would be!!

the 7d on the 300 works well in good light, tomorrow I'm shooting a couple of night games so I will play around a bit and see how I go with each combo, I'm actually impressed with the 1dx + 2x + 300 as far as AF speed goes, it matches or tops the 7d2 + 300 from my experience, the only time it gets caught out is if I've just shot something at half way and then the next shot is really close.
I do want to try a 1.4 x III with the 1dx and 300 but haven't managed to find one at the right price yet

Not much atmosphere, and a little ironic that they still played the respect the kicker banners
