I think the problem is subject motion, not depth of field. The sign at the right appears to be at about the same distance as the engine. I think you were panning to follow the engine, keeping it sharp, but blurring other objects either not moving or moving at a slower apparent speed. But if you want better sharpness for the entire screen, try a faster shutter speed and higher ISO.
