I've given up on ModelMayhem mostly. For my local area, I've found Instagram is the better place to find models. It's easier to find real references and get a better idea of their level of professionalism.

My experience with models was mostly the first few years I was learning portrait shooting. I networked through model mayhem a lot, and some with women, or a few men, at places I ate or shopped.

If it was a paid test shoot, like $50 or $100, etc., most all showed up. For trade shoots / TFP, about 9 out of 10 showed up, and about 7 out of 10 showed up on time instead of 1/2 hour or one hour late.

My first rule was networking mostly with those who replied back to a message or email within 24 hours or 48 hrs.. But all in all, things worked out rather solid for me to arrange time with models for test subjects and various projects.

If their profile is set to private, you can't find diddly on many men or women on Instagram. On model mayhem, if they have a profile and are members, there's a lot that can be tracked including credited photos and sometimes links to other photographers. But the profile is wide open to other members.

Both options can provide some success. But on the other hand, Instagram isn't hardly 1% of what model mayhem provides for "browse" capabilities. If I want a model in a certain city, for a certain genre, for a certain skin color, weight or hair color, model mayhem blows away Instagram 100 times over.
