Just reading through this thread now it seems like some are making posting photos on Instagram a lot more difficult than it really is.

What I do...

I have folders on my mac where I save all my instagram shots. In iTunes I just set up those folders to sync to my phone and voila, they're there. I have a preset for instagram on LR to set max width in landscape shots to 1080px. For portrait orientation I set it the crop to 5x7 and again a width of 1080px. These setting makes all the shots fit perfectly. There are many very good photographers on IG, way better than me. So to think IG is just a platform for kids and snap shot takers is gross misrepresentation.

One way I have noticed that IG is effecting photography is the prevalence of portrait orientation photographs for landscapes. Many photographers are filling the frame vertically in order to have a larger shot shown on IG when traditionally those shots may have been shot in landscape orientation in the past. I will sometimes to the same for some cityscapes and street photography. I take on shot landscape and another portrait so that I can use each shot on what ever media I would like, (IG, web, print).

Out of curiosity, if you use Instagram and LR why haven't you adopted the LRInstagram plugin?

This is only natural. Instagram cuts through the noise and focuses on art. Facebook focuses on the conversation, memes and bots.

My FB is focused on Toronto Art Gallery, Ottawa National Museum and Archive, Canadian Film making board, plus Beatles. Don't know how it works with IG to get it focused, but with FB I focus it. :)

I don't always have my laptop with me, I find it more convenient to have the photos already on my phone so that I can post when on the train, or waiting in an office or when the boss isn't looking.

Well, it looks like I will be using Instagram more often this season since I would be doing a lot of shooting.... Finally, put up 2 shots on my account. The problem is that there are people I don't want to follow but they are following me now. Do I have to follow them too??? My Iphone has been busy with notification alerts about.. Wow...new Instagram likes....LOLOLOLOL..........

No.

Many of the account on instagram (especially business accounts) are controlled by bots. They will like/follow/post meaningless comments like "killer shot" on any account that posts an image using certain hashtags. They do this in the hope that you will follow them back... and then in a couple of weeks they will automatically unfollow you.

You may also get comments/follows from porn accounts or "buy like/follow" accounts. I always report these to Instagram and they get banned. I would rather have a few less followers than have a mass of followers that are fake accounts and never interact with my images.

I agree with Dan. Many focus on gaining as many followers as possible. I don't care who follows as long as they appreciate what I'm posting, and I don't follow others unless I'm interested in their work. I will comment on occasion to give praise or ask questions, but not with the purpose of roping in another follower. I respond to comments that feel genuine, I check out who comments and view their photos decide whether to follow or not.

Instagram is many things to many people, it's pretty much up to you to decide what you want from it.

This.

BTW, bear in mind that you can select and delete peoples comments. You'll appreciate that feature as your account starts getting hit with the "check out my feed" comments, or people simply linking/plugging their own work/business in your comments section.

You can post photos directly to IG from your desktop or laptop computer through the Google Chrome browser. That said, I enjoy IG at a personal level and generally share my photos there for friends and family as opposed to FB. It's just another tool to reach out to people with photos.

I edit using LR on my PC and upload them to Dropbox. I then use the Dropbox app on my phone to export to Instagram. If when I look at the image on my phone I notice that it's not quite right I'll use the LR app on my phone for a few final adjustments before sending them to Instagram.

I should really put LR on my phone, but otherwise this sounds similar to what I do.

Don't get me wrong, I kinda hate Instagram, but it's become useful. I sure wish it were better, or that something less obnoxious would come along.
