One super nice day.. almost to bright to shoot in the sunlight, save a few clouds.. especially when I'm after black bears doing their best to fatten up for winter. So where do I go but to a blueberry patch the size of an 30 football fields. It was a normal bush field back in 2012 but it was burnt that year and the rejuvenation of the plant life was beyond imagine. Once the word was out every bear worth its salt was mawing down gallons of blue berries every day for weeks.

On this day I was in the field with 6 sows all at once, all of which had two cubs.. two or three had three cubs. Now there are clumps of burnt short spruce trees so thats where one could find the cubs while mom was eating her fill. The sows were very much preoccupied with eating blueberries to think about eating gristly old human...especially me.

This one was eating her way toward me and I let her. It was a blast and I have not had this opportunity since.

Every once in a while the cubs would make a squeal and she would stand up on her hind legs to try and see what was up... ya see, bears can't see jack really. Then go back to eating once again.

So lol .. No Zoo.. No wire.. No fences.. Just common ground had by all.

I'm dead serious; he's looking right at me!! If he was that close, the only thing he'd be smelling is dirty underwear!!

Maybe not nuts Pondrader, but I would say lucky. My understanding is that while bears don't see all that well, their sense of smell is excellent and their hearing is more than enough to know you were that close. Those are great shots and you are certainly more brave than I would be. -? Stay safe and keep up the excellent shots.

Stay safe and perhaps talk to some wildlife experts on how to work with bears. Don't take any chances!

That's a really nice shot. He's one tough looking bruiser.
