Using the flash as a master is a special case situation, in my view. I do it often for events were I want an on-camera flash for fill, with off camera flash for accent lights along with ambient.
The on-camera master can be configured to control three groups in addition to itself. That's sufficient for most situations.
The X-Pro is a controller for situations with complex lighting. i.e. commercial shooting rather than events with lots of subject movement.
That said, remember, on-camera flash control means three groups. I've used it with 6 lights in 3 groups.
As for auto zoom for speedlites. Think about it for a minute. Speedlite zoom is intended to match the light coverage to the focal length scene angle of view for on camera direct flash. In all other situations zooming the flash head is either irrelevant or should be manual to control the angle of coverage based on light position.
