The EF 100-400mm L II does near macro with it's short MFD. The Monarchs were a good bit further.

The first image is Monarch butterflies. Each night they gather on on the exact same spot of the ash tree in my front yard.

The next image is of a butterfly that happened to get caught by a patiently waiting crab spider. In this image I was driving 20 mph through a state park when I realized one of the flowers did not look just right. So I got out to investigate and found this life and death struggle.
