Upgrading from a 7D that saw lots of use. Well be looking on the site for tips and techniques as well as lens suggestions.

I really like the 24-105 II on my 5D4. Glad you have that. I also like the 16-35 f/4L IS and the 100 f/2.8L Macro. I probably use the 24-105 60% of the time, the 16-35 35%, and the 100 Macro 5%. I also have a 100-400 II, and it's my favorite lens. But I have a separate body for it.

Also Press the Q button and the Q screen comes up. Press Info and a second Q screen comes up with the AF array and additional programming functions.

New to Case numbers so don't get too hung up on them. I can easily nail steady BIF using Case 1. I typically BIF using Case 2 with the TS set to -2. I set my 7D up that way and shot for 5 years. With my 7D2 and 5D4 I also like to use the Zone AF.

This is as very good video for the 7D2 but the basics are the same for the 5D4. Listen to what the presenter says about Case 1 in the first minute.

Here is a basic breakdown that my help you.

Case 1. Base setting that will cover most shooting situations.

Case 2. If AF point/s go off your subject AF will hang on and not refocus instantly on something else to give you time to reacquire your original subject. This includes your subject being obstructed by something else.

Case 3. The opposite of Case 2. System will immediately refocus on another subject when AF point/s fall on it. The intent is that you are already focused on something else first.

Case 4. System is more sensitive to objects moving to towards and away which includes abrupt stops/starts and increase/decrease in speed from a start point to a finish point. This would include objects moving in a 45 degree angle.

Case 5. System is more sensitive to left, right, up and down movement.

Case 6. Combines cases 4 and 5.

I also set up the * button so Case 6 and Full Auto AF kick in. You can set up additional options for both the AF-On and * buttons via "Detail Set". You will like that option.

I only use Cases 5 and 6 in zone AF mode. While the manual says it works in the expansion modes I have yet to find any real benefit. I came across this in the 1DX II AF guide and it is the same for the 5D4 and 7D2. The 1DX II is just more of a responsive body.

I shoot some charity motorcycle rides where I have missed shots with the 7D due to focus hunting. I will pay lots of attention to these features and practice the different techniques.
I case see many use cases where the different case types can be utilized.

I'm liking the 24-105, mates well with the older Sigma 100-300 lens, only wish it was an OS lens.
I'm looking at the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 dg art lens or the Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L III USM for wide-angle landscape photography. A macro lens may come at a later time but the preferences is for a wide angle.

Hunting can be a lens issue but focus acquisition will be better with the 5D4.

In the different cases watch how the 3 parameters change in each one. Ties it all together.

Also in the purple focus menus you can control how much the focus rechecks itself once initial focus is achieved. Not to be mistaken with initial AF acquisition which is based on subject contrast. We have no fine tuning control over that.

Pages 136 and 137 (AI Servo) and 140 (One shot) of the manual. For the AI Servo factory setting is Equal for First Image Priority but some like to set it to Focus. Again this is won't effect initial focus and hunting, only verification after focus is achieved.

That is about it. Case numbers, Priority settings and Focus modes all the control we have. Main thing is to not get hung up on the case numbers. You don't need to master them in the first weekend. Just shoot and have fun.

My portrait of Frank Citro. Wanted to keep it clean and simple with some dramatic lighting but still looking natural.
This was shot for Desert Companion magazine. He is one of the few people remaining that are left in Nevadas Black Book meaning he cannot step foot in any Nevada casino.

Actually when you shoot the motorcycle rides try cases 2 and 3 and switch back and forth between 2 riders. I'm interested in your opinion.

Can I ask a dumb question.

I am going to investigate video and time lapse for something new.

Does this affect shutter count. I assume that video would not but I am unsure about time Lapse?
