Very nice, colorful, sharp image. I can sure tell that you focused on the eye of the dove. :-)

How did you calibrate your Tamron 150-600mm G2? My shots are very sharp in LiveView but not so sharp using the viewfinder

I saw your question. I may have mentioned this somewhere in this thread long ago, but after struggling with calibration, especially at infinity, I sent my lens and camera body to Tamron for calibration. It is covered under the warranty, so my only expense was shipping to them. They have very fast turnaround, and I had the gear back in less than a week, if I recall correctly. It was worth it, as the focus is now great. I have no problem calibrating shorter lenses, but this one gave me fits. I have not yet calibrated my 18-400, and with 24 separate settings I am not looking forward to it. I may just send that one in too!

I'm not sure what the warranty is like is South Africa, nor where you would send the lens for calibration, but it might be worth looking into. Otherwise, a quick email to Tamron will yield calibration instructions.

The Spyder device is similar to a cut-and-paste setup that I have been using. It will be great for shorter focal lengths, but if my experience is any indication, there will be issues when calibrating at longer focal lengths. The problem is that unless you have access to a very large indoor space, you will not be able to put the target at the recommended distance from the camera, even if you use the 50xfocal length standard for infinity (which is not infinity, of course). You will have to use some other method for the longer lengths, probably outside, where you will have to deal with wind, changing light, haze, etc. If you are using the Tap-in Console, you will also need a laptop to make adjustments as you calibrate.

IIRC, Tamron suggests calibrating at infinity by focusing on a target at the hyperfocal distance. That is very far away for 600mm, and I found that I was not patient enough to wait for a windless, hazeless, cloudless day to calibrate. I am very happy with the results from sending it to Tamron for calibration.

Very interesting. I did in fact contact Tamron South Africa. They gave me tips to adjust using a flower. They also recommended I send my gear to them via courier services to them and they will calibrate it for me. The only problem is my location. I'm about 2hours drive from my nearest Tamron shop. They want to send it to Cape Town which is like 1100km from my location. So I'd rather try on my own. I have tried Reikan Focal, Arash Hesegis method. But at the 20m distance(according to the distance you need for the Tap in Console) Reikan is very inconsistent.the distances it throws out are never the same.it even shows results that my target is 80m away when it's in fact 20m.When I moved my target to 10m it became more consistent. I'm still looking for the perfect solution. From my research you have to do the 2.2m first. Then plot it into the lens via the Tap in Console. After you have done all, you can go to 20m etc. I'm also wondering about the infinity. I have thought of putting the calibration number I got at 20m into the infinity setting on the Tap in Console. At further distances the DOF will make up for the rest. Just don't know how consistent it will be

You are very right pknight. I bought the Spyder originally for my Tamron 35mm which oddly enough after testing didnt require any adjustment. I only have enough room indoors to test the Tamron at 150 (it also didnt require an adjustment at that focal length) Ultimately I will send it to Tamron in the near future for proper calibration at 600mm. In the meantime the focus has proved to be mostly accurate and reliable. Any unsharp shots are usually my fault. I will say the lens performs very well wide open at 600mm on full frame.

Hi, am new to the forum. My husband David Stallard bought me this lens about a month ago, so I'm still getting used to using a telephoto lens.
I predominantly use it hand-held as opposed to using a tripod or monopod, so I'm on a bit of a steep learning curve.
The below images were taken at The Hawk Conservancy Trust near Andover,Uk. I'd appreciate any feedback or hints to help me develop my skills.

Hi Cory and welcome to the POTN forums. It's nice to have you here, and I believe you will enjoy it a lot.

The four photos you posted are really nicely done. It appears as though you've come a long way in your shooting BIF (birds in flight). These examples certainly prove it. Some of us like myself, really enjoy shooting BIF and find ourselves having to work hard at it. I think it's a very rewarding challenge.

Once again, it's good to have you with us.

Mike

Quite a few young ones from my property. Counted 6 in flight today. Most were way out of range for any quality shot.
