This is what I have learned is a "whip pan" in motorsports...I just screencapped the whole image with the photogs profile...can't share from IG. I have yet to try it...but holy crap I think its gonna be hard to do...another guy doing them at the same race, said 75-80 attempts to get 1...and this is a guy who is an accomplished pro...

Okay, this thread has some amazing pictures and all of you certainly know what you are doing!!

I have a question and I can't think of a better group to ask.

Too any/all of you: What makes a "successful" panning photograph?

I understand there are numerous factors, I.E shutter speed, where a mostly blurry image might be considered a failure if shot @1/100 but a success if shot @ 1/25.

I am culling my images from yesterday's Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and it's hard for me to judge which are "keepers" because I see one that I like (I know that has a lot to do with it being a success or not) then a little later I come across one that is more in focus that leads me to believe the previous one should get tossed in the bin.

I'd like to know your thoughts/opinions. I do not mean to hijack this awesome thread and if Mr. Sneath wants me to start other I'd be happy to, just thought I already had the perfect audience for this question.

Thanks

i go for the best looking image, and that is not always the sharpest.
is it pleasing to watch for example, and how long can it keep my attention on it, before i look ad a other image..

this one for example.

Thank you. That is a cool shot!!

I do normally go by what I like. But this is a unique situation. I was at the race doing a cover story of one of the biggest mechanics there, he currently is in charge of modifying, repairing , etc... 17 cars at this race. Quite a job to take on!! Anyway, he is originally from the area my newspaper covers. We were talking of the crazy numbers ($$$$) these people have invested in their vehicles. This is when he told me if I got some great shots of any of these cars, the owners would probably buy them from me.

So now it turns from what I like to what OTHERS may like.

I can tell you this: If I were the guy in the picture you just posted, I'd buy it!!
