Not that common but stunning and worth the effort to get a photo, they don't land that often so getting them in flight is best. I manual focus for these sort of shots.

great shots; I had one of these in my sights on Esher common which is a reliable site for this species but I couldn't get it in focus.

Thanks and a shame you missed it. I have not tried Esher Common for a while, the last time I went the amount of dog walkers put me off.

Thank you. These and other dragonflies patrol their patch so you soon get to see a pattern. I then try to find an area with a suitable background or get down low. I then focus on something about the same distance as the dragon is mostly flying away from me. Then it is just a matter of tracking the dragonfly and focusing at the same time. They are quite contrasty so with a little bit of practice it is do able. Very addictive though.
