Yeah that's the challenge! I think over time we all get better at taking a few moments if possible to collect oneself, then start shooting, that way you get your settings and random distracting elements out of the shot.

Now I wonder how many people/lenses have taken spills after a hasty pursuit. In the bird photography world, it's the opposite, so you get used to the slow approach of that bird it outta there fast!

Two months ago, I took a face dive into the sand, along with my 6D/Tamron 150-600, trying to circle a bird for a better sun direction. :-x

Ouch! Sounds like you were able to save the camera/lens at the expense of a bruise! I recently endured a nice bee sting chasing owls, was worth it though! More bees nests out there this time of year!
