How far away should I be from society to get a shot like this? And is it possible in Southern California?

That came out beautiful, David. The foreground is also very nicely done.

Thank you! I could actually brighten up the foreground substantially without losing any detail...I brought the exposure down quite a bit to have a more realistic blended final image.

You all are inspiring me! I'm headed to Maine in a week to stay with my Father In Law. He lives in the mountains, and you can literally see the Milky Way from his driveway. I've tried taking photos a few times, and was happyish with the results. I'm just learning, so this year will be the first time I have a good, wide lens that tells me when I'm focused to infinity. All my other photos were a little out of focus. Wish me luck!

I live too close to Philly to attempt anything close to home. I'm too lazy to get up and drive somewhere in the middle of the night, hahaha.

Good luck and don't forget to share the results.

Looking at the map, is it mandatory to be in the dark grey and black for these shots? So Cal is polluted with light so I'm trying to see how far we need to drive tonight.

Where are you? Head towards Joshua Tree.

I've narrowed it down to 2 locations, each 4 hours away that are in grey areas. Eagle Mountain or Paymaster Landing.

Paymaster and shooting se should be good.

It would help to know where you're located. You don't have to be in an absolutely dark area, though it certainly helps.
