Mike, kind of getting away from the subject of Best Bird Portrait but in reply to your comment about those that enjoy waterfowling. I’m in the heart of the Mississippi flyway but never did any goose hunting. Only ducks. I lived for duck hunting. Had to slow down and finally quit due to old age and failing health. Here’s a shot of guys coming in from a morning hunt in one of the public hunting areas close to home.

Interesting shot Doc. I notice that those are all young guys, not old-timers like us. We have a lot of wildlife areas in central California where I live, and I either hunt the wildlife areas, or our family duck club (which is in the picture). I still manage to get out a couple times a week or more during our 3 month season, and generally the duck hunting is quite good (with geese now and then).

I took that shot on December 26, 2016, the day after getting the 100-400 ver ii as a Christmas present from my wife. Back in the day I hunted the public areas as well as flooded rice fields that we leased.

It sounds like you did a ton of hunting back in the day. You were obviously a fanatic hunter, like I was. One day after this past season closed, the dog in the photo (Annie) died and now I have one dog (Moxie) left. She is about to turn 3 years old, so I'll be able to hunt as long as she is with me. I've put a lot of training in on her, and she is quite a capable hunter. My dogs have always been my best hunting pals. :-)

Old shot taken at the Saint Louis Zoo of a Saddle-billed stork. Second is a Cormorant, also at the Saint Louis Zoo. I love their eyes, so vibrant.

Many of these birds have that attribute - legs, eyes, beak - often colourful and vibrant.
Beautiful. Thanks

Clipper those CB geese are fascinating to sit amongst and have them waddle about. They are big!

I talked to the guys in the lead boat. They were tired, cold and hungry, but they did have their limit of ducks. That helped their feelings a bit. :-D
