Red Flag 18-3, Nellis AFB, Nevada.

1. Heat distortion. The temperature was 113F/45C. Heat waves coming up from the surface ruined many a picture that week.

Nice captures!

I was stationed at Castle AFB (still live there) and I miss seeing/hearing them.

I was a gunner on D and G models. Best job I ever had. I love seeing them still flying.

D model was in the tail; radar, full canopy of windows. G model was up front, behind the pilots, but still facing backwards. Radar only, no windows. D model was awesome.

Given who makes it I would say B17 for ETO or B29 for PTO. The B52 was a direct Boeing descendant of those earlier bombers of WWII. Although they did at least sort out the limited bomb load for the type of aircraft and required operations compared to the B17. A DH98 Mosquito could carry the same weight of bombs to Berlin as a B17F, and do it at the same cruising speed as a P51D!

I've wondered if problems in mass construction were the reason that we didn't make more of them. They were certainly one of the best aircraft in the war.
