Just got back a couple hours ago from a pool shoot (25' deep pool) with a bunch of freedivers (breath hold only, no tanks)...here is one of the many shots I took of Julie (instructor)

Very nice, James. How many shots? My wife and I are headed to the north rim of the Grand Canyon as well as a bit of the Utah canyons this fall. Any advice? It will be our first trip to that area.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Is overall photo exposure better judged by a well adjusted rear LCD or the histogram?

Is it better to underexpose the image a tad and increase the shadows in post or overexpose a tad and lower the highlights in post?

Histogram and the later.
Exposing to the right or ETTR in short.

One of the many link that explains it, was on the first page of Google search.

Since the 5Dmkiii and now the mkiv, a lot of people I know with these bodies ETTL, as its now easier to pull detail out of the shadows than to un-blowout the highlights.

Just to add, I have been a strong proponent of ETTR since well, my first DSLR.
In addition, I have found that most all of my EOS DSLRs have in the past tended to underexpose a bit in auto modes in normal light, so I really considered plus 2/3 ec or so to be "centered" in daylight.

The 5D4 definitely has thrown all that out the window.
I don't tend to ETTL either, I have found the auto exposure set to center to be the closest thing to perfect in most lighting conditions where an auto mode will work.
I still rely on histogram when setting manual exposures, but the LCD is very good at telling when I set things to light or dark.

Same story with the 80D, I haven't seen any benefit w/ ETTR.

My 5D4 I run Auto ISO at -2/3 of a stop under (ETTL, I guess?), as I feel that my shots are generally a little too much over exposed for my taste.

I think 7 or 8 shots. As for the Grand Canyon...I've only been there once so I don't have much advice to give.
