This is very like the European Libythea celtis, or Nettle Tree butterfly, and both species' lh plants are nettle trees. Interesting that they have evolved slightly differently, in that your American Snout has more white on the upperside and will sit with its wings open, whereas the Nettle Tree does not - well, of the hundreds we saw in Greece this year, puddling, not one had their wings open while at rest, unfortunately.

In Michigan, I've only seen about a dozen so far this year, & my milkweed 'farm' has only had two caterpillars so far. A few years ago, assassin bugs killed the only one I found.
