In Michigan, I've only seen about a dozen so far this year, & my milkweed 'farm' has only had two caterpillars so far. A few years ago, assassin bugs killed the only one I found.

That is sad to hear. But glad you are doing something to help them with your milkweed farm.

I'm not good at IDing them, but I was thinking either a Red Spotted Purple or a Pipeville Swallowtail or a female Spicebush Swallowtail. :-) But wouldn't bet money on any.

Checking today, I found two more caterpillars, one small & young & one much older. So maybe things are looking up!

That's good! A bit of help for the Monarch.

We have very little milkweed here in Alberta. I've been trying to get some to grow, but the eastern variety keeps failing. The seedlings wilt when they get to be about an inch tall. I think the air is too dry here. :-( There is some milkweed growing elsewhere in the province, but I think it must be a different species. It is not common.

From my back yard a few years ago. I spent many hours of my youth running through the woods behind my house, butterfly net in hand.....

7Dii and my old (and sold) Canon 400 5.6L.....

It's surprisingly awesome with the 1.4 extender too. The 2x works well, but the AF is slower and misses more.
