I also noticed the 1/10 second. You also use a variety of f stops. Do you mind giving your thoughts on setting your camera for particular shots? Are your f stops chosen based on how far away the background is? When you shoot 1/10 ss are you on some type of tripod or are you hand holding the camera? The pics are great by the way

I’m going to guess that he’s shooting in shutter priority.
That’s my how I do it. Too much to mess with aperture when you’re trying to nail pans, especially if there’s a mix of sun and cloud.

Could be wrong and he’s a Camera ninja. I’m more of a camera plodder.

Actually everything was shot in manual, the lighting conditions were pretty static throughout the day so there wasn't much need to adjust once I was dialed in for the shutter speed I wanted at a particular location. Even when it's partly cloudy I try to stay in manual if I can, as long as the clouds are relatively consistent when they pass it front of the sun (for example, if the shade under cloud cover is consistently 2/3 of a stop or one stop darker than in the sun that's a quick flick of the aperture dial; and even if I'm off by 1/3 or 1/2 a stop that's a simple fix in post with no real penalty at low ISO settings). I don't have anything against the priority modes and do use them from time to time, I just prefer manual.

I'm happy to share but I'm not a pro motorsport photographer or anything, so this is just what works for me. Almost everything I posted above was handheld, even the 600mm at 1/60. The only exception is the almost head-on shot of the 911 where I was on a monopod just waiting for cars to crest the hill and only tracking them for a very short distance as I fired off a couple frames. The main driver for the settings in each shot is shutter speed, aperture is just whatever it took to get down to the shutter speed I wanted. I do have an ND filter for the 600mm but didn't use it at all for any of these shots. The head on shot might have been a good one to use the filter and play with a larger aperture, but my 7-year old son was tagging along and he was getting a bit bored of being in that spot because it's not really the best place to spectate from.

On any shot where I can see the tires I want to be at 1/250 or below, preferably quite a bit below for full side-on shots. I usually shoot for a bit at around 1/125 just to nail a few sharp shots and then I'll go really low and see what I can get. Having a camera that can fire off 14 frames a second definitely helps because you just get that many more chances on any given pass to be in perfect sync with the car on at least one. I had to throw out a lot of shots at 1/10 for every good one that I got though. Glad you like the photos!

BTW, my son wound up on the track's FB page after one of the working photogs asked us to stage a photo: https://www.facebook.com …10156323398169003/?type=3 (external link)
