I've switched to Sony twice. Hated it. Now I'm thinking about doing it a third time.

Last wedding we took 6 cameras between the two of us, none failed but still a backup in the bag for sure. Come to think of it I've never had a camera fail on me but have dropped one down a flight of stone steps in a church. It survived with just a cracked EVF.

The XF100mp has a single card slot so there is no way that could be used as a professional camera :-P

Medium format in a commercial setting is tethered 99.9% of the time. Source: I've worked as both an assistant and retoucher on set. I've never seen a MF shooter not tethering. I'm sure it happens, but probably so rarely that between that and the fact that very few people actually use MF to begin with...that we're not likely to hear about failures.

Plus, when tethering you see in real time your photos, you know they're not corrupted. And on top of that the 2nd assistant is usually backing them up to external drives and handing them off fairly often.

Perhaps the sarcastic tint to my post was not as evident as I thought.

It happens alright, more so out on location than in a studio but even then pushing a preview through capture pilot to an large iPad gives all a good view of the shot. If you are out shooting editorials you more than lightly won't be tethering.

There are my card failures so far this year.... so yes..... if you are shooting for a project, and money is on the line, or a deadline.... dual is the way to go. First two the connector end failed and broke off, the last the "lock" slider failed can't be written to anymore. Not very happy with SanDisk as you can imagine.

I've got probably 20 cards I keep in my little card keeper wallet... not sure. All the others have done very reasonably well. I have one in my desk drawer that is a whopping 32 mb! This is the first time I've had this happen. I wlll be honest, I am not easy on these things. Changing cards during a game... handing them off to a runner. But still.... really bad. Makes me really have issues with Sandisk - which I have been using for years. The only other one I have destroyed is my Eye-Fi card... eh.... didn't need it anymore anyways.

I've had a couple of sandisks fail but never while working in camera. I found them bad when I went to format which I do before each shoot after downloading.

WOW, That's some work on those cards, not seen anything like that before. I've had the separator break free from a lexar card but that always felt lightweight to me, I've found the Sandisk cards to be great quality in comparison.

Seriously haha. Ive been using SanDisk for well over a decade, never seen that from mine or any of my friends. If you are abusing cards like that, no wonder you are getting card failures. Should be replacing them every 3-6 months at that rate. I replace mine yearly, never had an issue aside from the cheapo Kingston card like 14 years ago. The other thing I do is format them monthly. If you shoot a lot and you just erase the images and keep writing over it a ton of times, a failure is more likely to happen. Format your cards often.

It's only the U3s that are failing like this from SanDisk. My U1s are just fine. The must come down different lines.

They do get formatted each time because I am never sure what the next gig will be, and which camera I will grab. The Sony's and Canon's don't like the image database each other setup, and I've had to recover a disk a couple of times when they weren't formatted and came from the other brand directly. So that rule is part of my workflow now.

They get used 3 to 4 times a week - between 1,000 and 2,000 frames per week. I use a card set per period - so hockey I use 3 sets, basketball 2 sets, football 4 sets.... you get the idea. It's been only these particular brand and size of disks that have been failing. None have had r/w issues.... they just fall apart. Go figure.

Niche $$ Medium format I’m surprised they’ve made no provisions for dual cards.
Mind boggling! Rare to see medium format events shooters. .... better reschedule the model photo shoot :)

The guys making good enough bucks to buy/lease Medium Format stuff have left the wedding market behind, to those willing to make peanuts for all the shooting time plus post-processing work that has to be done, all to have to deliver all the photos on DVD. Besides, as already commented, there aren't that many of them out there in general

Probably stating what you all know already, but most MF studio shooters are recording direct to off camera/tethered/wireless storage already. Capturing on an attached HD simplifies the workflow. You don't just "download" a bunch of 50 to 100 mpx images like you do from memory cards. So do use cards... but MF is usually used on a formal shoot setting. The current models feature USB 3c ports - but incase you don't want to shoot tethered.... yes.... the HBD-100c does have one CF card slot and another SD card slot.

My wedding photog used a hassie MF. Back then the Canon 5D was in it's infancy and may film guys started to adapt to digital.

I'm still a very happy Canon shooter. I will say I'm willing to try other brands too as you can see. The more I think about new camera's these days it's a nice evolution.

If people do not like it.....sell it.

I had a hard time with the Sony world but now I'm cool with it for my casual photography. I still need to buy native glass so it's just $$$$ I dont feel like spending as it's redundant with my Canon lens gear. I'm willing to try though.

Life is too short measuring gear online. Go out and shoot !!
