I was thinking that when I seen the pic too :p I bet Nikon won't be happy when they see Canon didn't forget the button!

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, if this is anything other than a hobbled piece of junk that is 3 generations behind SONY, there are going to be a lot of dissapointed people out there.

Canon users dont care about Sony cameras no matter how much chatter there is here about some kind of mass exodus. The people on sites like this are a blip on the radar screen when it comes to camera sales. Besides, features like -6ev, fully articulating screen, 5k+ AF points, touch screen, battery life and top LCD are superior to any Sony mirrorless. Not to mention Canon has already blown Sony out of the water with their initial lens lineup and thats just the beginning.

I like the specs so far. Not going to be the camera for me but it might get there fast.

I think that pic in the wild is a disguise. Like they do with cars. I bet it will look different.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I strongly agree with this. I don't have any particular data to support my argument but anecdotally it appears that people who obsess over the subtleties between cameras on forums represent a very small subset of users.

In another thread you say Canon will go from 30 to 50 megapixels so they can keep up with the competition:

Mbell1975 wrote in post #18698735 (external link)
Both the a7riii and Z7 nearly double the a7iii and Z6 in MP count. There is zero reason to believe Canon wouldn't do the same with their higher end model. Bumping it up from 30 to 36-40 would be a joke no one would take seriously. Its going to have at least 50MP. Finally a near MF quality mirrorless camera that will probably come in $3500-$4k, and if its fully loaded with dual slots, IBIS, 4K 60FPS etc...its going to sell by the truckloads! They left those features off the EOS R for a reason you know.

And here you say ...

If the end users don't care about other systems, why would Canon?

Well, canon could go the Sony route and release a more "pro" model with the same megapixels as the EOS R but raise the price $2k, but many would take offense to that I think. Sony did it in reverse, the a9 was released before the a7iii and when the a7iii came out, people lost their minds at how cheap it was. Not smart to do it in reverse and Canon will have a higher end FF mirrorless model. Its going to be almost double the MP just like Sony and Nikon did with their higher end models. Canon needs reasons to get people to shell out an extra $1500-$2k on the higher end model and we all know megapixel count is still one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) selling points.

The a9 and a7iii are both 24MP cameras. So you think what? 4-6 more megapixels over the 30MP R and an extra card slot is going to warrant a $2k price increase on the higher end model?

lolz

Canon will be the laughing stock of the photography world if they tried that. They are not that stupid.

Yeah, I laugh like hell at all the rubes buying the 1D X over the 5DIV.

Uh Canon already does this.

The 1DXII is a 20.2 MP camera that costs $5,500. It was released in Feb 2016. In August of 2016 Canon released the 5D MKIV...a 30mp body that shares a lot with the 1dXII including the same AF system, but costs $3,800.

Are 1DXII users insulted by this? No because while the 1DXII and 5DIV have a lot of similarities, the 1DXII excels in areas very specific to pro sports and wildlife photography, and there are people that are willing to pay for those capabilities.

Same deal with the a9 and a7III.

The term "hybrid" was in use in the past, and yes it meant both phase and contrast. I don't think any FF cameras were described as having hybrid AF.

I'm pretty sure they dropped the use of "hybrid" to describe current AF systems and changed the way the LV AF works.

Sony technically still calls their system hybrid AF as it's using CDAF. The on-sensor PDAF systems have gotten to a point where CDAF isn't really needed as a crutch anymore, but it's still useful for computational AF like eye-focus.

Fundamentally the only difference between dual pixel and the on-sensor PDAF systems that Sony use is that where Sony is partially shading some of the pixels that are used for imaging and using some the light that hits them for PDAF, dual pixel has a separate set of pixels that are purely dedicated to PDAF. That 5,600 AF points is actually the number of PDAF pixels.

There is some evidence pointing to the a9 having dedicated PDAF pixels too. The a9 actually has a 28mp sensor, but only 24 are used for imaging. It gets super technical, but the theory is that 4mp of that sensor are dual pixel type pixels being used exclusively for PDAF.

I'm a Canon user and yes I care about Sony because Sony has the best AF for portraits right now with regard to ease of use. As a sports camera I think they are still just behind the other two with their professional bodies. For other stuff, the Sony sensors are better IMHO and before I got a great deal on a used 6Dii, I was about to order an A7III and adapt my lenses.

Ive been a professional fashion/glamour photographer for 15 years and somehow Ive gotten by just fine without eye AF as have millions of other professional portrait shooters :-) Oh and if Canon were so behind Sony and Nikon for sports cameras, why do they still dominate every, single major sporting event? Surely those pros (or the billion dollar companies they work for) could afford a Sony or a Nikon right?
