This is the best they can do? They fell short of Sony and they really needed to match Sony. I do not own a Sony but it is the new benchmark. Both Canon an Nikon missed the boat. Another disappointing release. "IMO" I still love my Canon 6D and glass :) I love my Fuji mirrorless too *LOL*

Why do they need to match Sony? Why can’t they do their own thing?

In my opinion it’s a great start. Not perfect (what is?). But Sony could take a page from Canon DPAF for example.

Because Sony fanboys need to complain Canon can't indovate instead of copying Sony tech :p

I would say so too but I have found Sony's AF to be as good as DPAF in stills. I haven't really tested it as much in low light but depends on conditions Canon could have the advantage since Sony cameras don't utilize stop down focusing. It will be interesting if Canon have stop down focusing in the R.

One thing I really like about the R and RF lenses is the customizable ring. I personally don't like the aperture rings on lenses purely for aesthetics reasons but the ring blends in so well on the RF lenses.

Canon is good at the marketing to make it sound like they created something amazing and so new. I really dont see anything that makes me wish i was still shooting canon. Hell the 50 1.2 seems larger than the DSLR version and the 28-70 is gigantic and 95mm filter. that thing is going to be so heavy and cumbersome I bet oh and they didnt even give it IS. Nothing really special this system provides that most other have already been offering for years.

Looks awesome, honestly. I also like the fact having to microadjust lenses would be a thing of the past with sensor based AF. Using my existing lenses is always a perk, too.

Very tempted to unload my 5D3 and pick this up.

I read the release notes on my commute. Two things it mentions. Silent continuous will added via firmware and DPP for the iPad! DPP Express will be available in October.

I think it's a decent enough camera; however I do think Canon is milking it's business aspect as much as possible, which is why they're probably still in this business. I don't think they want to bite into their 5DX and 1DX lines just yet but suspect a higher spec mirrorless is on the way. I think they did enough to keep the loyal Canon folks at bay from jumping ship too much, especially if they were heavily invested in lenses. If this had come out about a year earlier, I'm not sure if I would have moved to Sony.

Perhaps not but when I been reading comments on various sites about "wow this is an amazing camera" that screams fanboy.

This camera should of been released with the A7II timeline. I don't doubt that this camera is a start of a new beginning. But being normal canon it's crippled already. Because they keep advertising it as "mid grade". They are holding out better features for a top tier product.

I love canon and I've been a very loyal fanboy myself. But I'm sick and tired of their product preservation. Sony releasing the A7iii told me they mean business in keeping the best possible tech available at all price ranges.

They are rolling the dice with their Canon name again.... and again... and again... so they can continue to rape it's loyal customers wallets. Again they can release a big battery powered poop stick and it will sell great. Because of their brand loyalty.

...whatever happen to being competitive.

you mad, bro?

;)

Being a professional real estate photographer the the Sony A7III is now by far the preferred camera by a growing number of real estate photographers I shoot only with a 5D Mark IV and love it I would have considered the R series but I cannot believe it doesn't include dual sd slots the Sony does and its less expensive Of course the 5D does and since I am primarily a wedding photographer everyone knows the peace of mind dual slots gives you when shooting weddings or really any other paid shoot. So really Canon you couldn't have included dual slots in the R camera at that price point!

I doubt I will upgrade at a $2300 price point, but would if the price point was in the $1800 range.

The downsides if true...
No FF 4k.
No 120 1080P
No IBIS

The positives based on what I read this morning via release email...
5,000+ AF points!!!
Eye AF
AF to F11 on all points.
AF at -6 EV
Rear touch screen is far more interactive and you can move and swipe.

I really don't care about the size because all the lenses I would be using are large anyway.

If I was looking for a new camera and didn't just buy a used 6Dii, I'd probably spend the money and hop in.

This has caught my attention enough to wait for reviews and more info!

I do wonder if the EF line will get a 28-70 f/2 L at some point

Well Damn... I've been waiting on this camera, in larger portion for strong video. This camera isn't it.

Now what do I do?

I am a canon fanboy because of glass investment. I just bought a 16-35L not 4 weeks ago.

:-(

One thing Rudy Winston mentioned on YT was that there's no RF-to-EF adapter...yet...hmmm...
