I use either my 430EX or 580EX, both still reliable after all these years.

Thanks Jenn ~ so you can adjust the output on the flash vs in camera? (which we can't do with the 5Dc)

You can control the flash output either on flash or on camera. Adjusting on flash is plus/minus 3 stops, adjusting on camera plus/minus 2 stops.

I'm not much of a flash brain - so on the flash you can adjust with buttons - and by on camera - do you mean adjusting camera exposure? Or are there somehow setting you see in-camera?

Thank-you

Another Q from the new kid in the class... Can we connect a cable between the 5D and cell phone to get a better idea of exposure? If so what cable am I looking for?

Also, (aside from a cable above) what level of brightness on your lcd works best for judging exposure?

What say the class?

I don't know if you have the operators manual but if not, here is a link the one from Canon USA: Manual (external link)

I don't know of any way to connect an external device to view exposure. Maybe someone else has explored this question.

To control flash output using control on the camera body, it is called Flash Exposure Compensation. Here is a picture of where the button is located:

Thank-you for a the USA link to the Manual - and ah ha! I gleaned that icon on the top panel but didn't sink in about FEC - Thanks again Gart!

To be more clear, I mean is there a way to see our LCD images (or image playback) on our phone using a cable of some sort?

I know we can do remote wifi playback with newer models.
