EOS-R - It's out. Thoughts?

I thought the same thing. I started with the XT1 and did MF adapted lenses. then got the 18-55 after that the 35 f2 and finally the 55-200. After realizing how much more I enjoyed that I added the extra lenses and upgraded to the XT2 and sold off all my Canon gear and have never looked back.

In the end, my images will be similar regardless of brand.

Or my Tokina 11-16 that I haven't used in years.

I can't really afford to jump ship either, especially as a hobbyist/enthusiast. Therein lies the true tragedy of all of this. There are many like us.

Yes, that should now be an interesting lens to use on the EOS-R.

Also imagine the 17-55 2.8 IS... Of course now that there is the 24-70 f4 IS, this is less interesting.

I would love to see how the 55-250 STM would work on the EOS-R. I think it might work pretty well in fact. The EOS-R with adapter has at least opened up EFS glass to the FF without having to do any mods to the rear of the lens, or using any kind of tube or 1.4x TC.

Using the EF-S lenses on the EOS R didn't fully register with me previously. I've been debating whether or not to sell my EF-S lenses, so I guess I'll be holding on to them for a bit longer.

With all the due respect in the world, you weren't vested in Canon with that lineup. You may have felt like you were, but you weren't. I'm sitting here looking straight at 4 white lenses, both white x adapters, 5 pieces of L glass, and more EF-S and non-L lenses than I care to count, complete with a MkIII, a 6D, an 80D, a 70D and even an old T2i. THAT'S vested. We're talking the covers pulled up over my head in terms of a hobbyist.

The EVF was pretty convincing. Seeing the DOF exactly how I would see it later on my computer is a game changer. Now I know why my Sony (a7R III) photography buddy has been talking about.

And the weight was great even with the 50mm 1.2. That's why I asked to mount it for me. I just wished they had allowed me to insert my SD card so I can play with the files once I got home.

One thing that is great about going to B&H is that once it is officially on sale, you can play with it as long as you want (well sorta). And they let you insert your memory card. I did that back when I was contemplating the 6D back in 2014. And guess what? I went the next day and bought it! They also have an area to try lenses on your body. It's great being near a store like B&H. It's also bad...LOL!

This **** is just so confusing, full frame, crop, EF, then EF-S and now ER....I'm going back to film and to hell with this...

I've bought and sold more lenses than I can count, probably a lot more than you listed.

Dont consider it switching, but a transition

I recently sold a bunch of lenses to get a Drone. Transitioning my gear to some other gear.

I cant get motivated to sell my filters, but I need to sell off a bunch of those. Selling gear in general is a royal PITA, but I like to do it when Ebay has these low fee specials, I'll tend to sell in bulk those days.

This, and the fact that many of us can only buy a body ONCE. Then we make it work for the next 5 years come hell or high water because we're not buying a new toy next Sept.
So whatever we choose, we're stuck with. That puts a lot more emotion into all of it IMHO.

I will say after looking at the Fuji XT-3 specs and comparing many of them....they really nailed that release. It's a major win for them at $1800, but at $1499 it's insane.

good for you. I was plenty invested in something that is a pure hobby for me to make the jump for a switch. Dont go acting like ohhh look at me I am super duper canon man I have all this. Making a switch with multi thousand dollars worth of gear is a big decision for anyone.

The last 2 pages have been the kind of productive exchange I enjoy. Hey gossamer88, did you get a chance to check out the 28-70 beast?

Just watched Gordon Laing's preview. He did something pretty cool. He walked around with it in selfie mode both in 1080p and 4K. In 1080p he was using the 24-105. When he switched to 4K the crop factor really zoomed onto his face. It was pretty scary..jk...

Then he switched to the EF-S 10-18 in 4K and it was just wide enough. Something that cannot be done with the 5D4. Well you can. But will have to get the more expensive 16-35 for example.

Or the less expensive Sigma 10-22 or Tokina 11-16. Both of those can be EF mount so will fit onto a Canon FF camera with a mirror without fear of it giving you 7 years of bad photos

I also moved away from Canon & was slightly heavily "invested" in it yep it costs but moving into a camera system that was less pricy meant I was not quite as out of pocket as I could have been... which was nice.

If you looked at any of my old 5D4 posts you can smell the canon fanboy strong in my words. I "justified" my 5D4 to make me feel like I was doing the write thing. You guys don't realize how hard it was for me to buy a Sony. I literally fought myself. I was so attracted to Fuji I just had to try them. Bought the XT-20 and X-E3 and found lots of joy with the mirrorless idea. But it was lacking speed and ergonomics and it's menu sucked. If there was anyone wanting a canon mirror less it was me.

What many don't realize is I am a 1 camera person. Period. I need the jack of all trades. I shot 4K video with the 5D4... I even bought a 256GB SD card to have the space to do this. The files sizes sucked and required post compression to do anything usable with it. I literally work my butt off. I'm a dad. I don't have the joys of dedicating tons of time to photography or post editing. Literally this year I have worked 2100 hours... I'll be over 3,000 hours this year. Thats 1,000hrs more than most 40hr workers. So what I need is a do all camera. For now... that is the Sony.

Sorry... for me when I see certain fanatics comments I see my old self. I've outgrown that. They are all tools and I don't care what the name is. I just need the best tool for my needs. And that is the greatest thing of our current camera situation. We have TONS of great options. Everyone does have different needs.

...just don't be one sided and don't be afraid to be considered "GAS" and go buy and try and find what works for you.

..and never settle for mediocre releases as being amazing. Demand the best... for the cheapest. Of course.
