So I don't derail the pictures of bridges thread any more, I'll just post links to a couple of stories about the bombing raids. See http://www.naa.gov.au …on/fact-sheets/fs195.aspx (external link) and http://education.abc.net.au …912/the-bombing-of-darwin (external link).

I did not know this either. Amazing how much of history is left out of what is taught to us in school.

It's my life and I'll get pissed if I want to.

What are the buildings on the bridge with windows? Residences?

Once upon a time they were residences and butcher shops -nowadays they are tourist souvenir shops, jewelers.

Beautiful photos.

Thank you, Richard. Got up early and stayed up late, then wandered the streets. The photos almost take themselves. ;-)a

Nice set of pics. (Been there, done that, didn’t get the T shirt and can’t boast about the pics).

Good morning Pippan.
Thanks for the links. I knew that the ANZACS were heavily involved in both WWI and WWII, particularly at Gallipoli and in Greece but only do I vaguely recall North Australia being caught up in the bombing raids. However, I vividly remember the Yanks being here during WWII. Each GI seemed to his own personal jeep to impress the girls and supply of chewing gum for us kids. I have a couple of funny stories but I must not derail the thread. We also took heavy bombing raids.

Pedestrian bridge at Somesville on Mount Desert Island.

Couldn’t decide which I liked more between the two photos.
