I heard the joke at least fifteen years ago, in this country, but it referred to football.

I think it's been around far longer than that . . .

The beauty of the NZ/Aus joke thing is that we make the exact same jokes about each other, with just the countries changed. Charming, but kind of pointless.

My point was that it was originally not necessarily about Australia or New Zealand, but any football, rugby etc team. It can be adapted or appropriated any way you wish.
