The Brits had a Tri-plane? I guess I didn't know that . . .

That’s a Sopwith Triplane. They weren’t really a huge success and were relatively quickly replaced by the more successful and popular Sopwith Pup.

There first one looks like air to air photography.

I'm curious, have you used that camera/lens combo with the 1.4xIII extender?

Thanks! I was very pleased with them especially as the weather wasn’t so good! I do have the 1.4xlll converter but I wasn’t using it when I took these and don’t tend to use it very often.

Never saw Spitfires, but Sopwith's were not uncommon across our skies.
Never a tri-plane though.

A couple from the Owensboro (KY) Air Show Sep 15, 2018 We had a great sky with a mix of clear blue and clouds in the background.

Two more with these demonstrating a shutter speed of 1/2500 sec. is not fast enough when shooting jets flying at 400 mph (+/-) from opposing directions. I was tracking the planes going right to left. Having a camera that can shoot 10 FPS is a big help.

Not quite sure I can agree with you on this. You may have cropped too deep, have a less than a razor sharp lens, or a filter on it or a less than perfect pan. Any or all will combined will have that effect on the photo. The first of my samples was shot at 1/1600 & carefully edited, but the second was just shot sat at 1/2000 and is a very quick edit to the jpg. because I'm not working on the files relating to the Snowbirds performance yet.

Edited to add that atmospheric haze can also soften your photos.

Thanks. Timing was a lot of luck and 10 FPS. Each image just before and just after these images showed only one jet. I got lucky. I really wish the SS had been 1/5000 sec. There was enough light to go that fast without ISO being too high. This was my first air show with performers like the Blue Angels, hopefully it won't be the last.

May I ask where you were for this shot? On the beach, or pier? Looks like you were close to the action.
