Some shots of leaping Atlantic salmon at Buchanty Spout on the River Almond in Perthshire. It's important to note that none of these are in focus. The fish are in the air for about one second and moving quickly. There isn't time to get them fixed and focused (well, not enough time for my ageing reflexes), so it is a case of pre-focusing on a chosen distance and forcing keepers from the ones that come closest to that. Deep depth of field is not an option either, as it is a shaded spot and shutter speed needs to be reasonably fast and ISO can't be too high. So, all-in-all, it's a good workout for the lens as well as for the camera and photographer! One thing working in favour... 85 mm is the perfect focal length for the job.

An oddly low shutter speed choice for indoor shots, is it Auto ISO? I set mine to 1/125 minimm for people. Also, using AWB-W would get rid of that incadescent light cast - the skin is almost completely orange on the second shot; human eyes are able to separate mixed lights unlike digital sensors that need to be white balanced.

Shot in Aperture Priority @ f1.4, with ISO locked at 100 - for the very purpose of putting it to the test, at indoor, low light shots... given there are 4 stops of IS on offer. ;-)a I thought it did not bad - though dependent on lack of motion blur from the subjects... that's where I did my best with the timing. :p

Skin in second shot - well, it was shot through a window (see the reflections). Maybe that played a part - or maybe she had been to a spray-tanning salon. Check the white "Alien" label on her belt. It's white. ;-)a

Went out with the local pheasant shoot last Saturday. Just to see how it went, I did the whole day with just this lens. A few (non-shooting) shots...

Not many folk with this lens? I like it. Bit of chromatic aberration to look out for, but otherwise...

Hello everyone! I just ordered mine today from my fav store B&H. Is a “happy birthday to me” gift, my bday is next 14th, was also pondering in adding a new cam but I think I’ll wait to see what Canon comes up with this new year. Anyways, hope to join the club soon...
