RF is the best way to go. They designed that mount to maximize the performance of their FF mirrorless system and they went so far as to decouple it from the EOS-M. EF lenses may work well on RF bodies, but they will never be fully optimized to the EOS R AF system.

Ok, but my next camera was going to be whatever the next 7d is...there are no RF lenses for what i shoot, i dont care about FF...the small mirrorless idea is useless to me when the camera is attached to a massive lens... the thing i don't get about this camera is that i thought fps on mirrorless are crazy good...and this thing is just terrible...give me an ef mount 7d III WITH LIKE 12fps, over some RF mount camera with 8

I mean if it's all RF from here on out, why introduce those new super telephotos in EF mount?

Mirrorless FPS can be fast...Fuji just announced a 30fps camera, and the a9 does 20fps.

But Canon is several generations behind in terms of mirrorless and sensor tech (ability to shoot really fast FPS is a matter of sensor read out speeds..so sensor design matters)

Also...there's a lot of merit to apsc for sports....but Canon shut the door on pro aps-c when they separated the RF mount from their APS-C mirrorless cams.

Well how much was the 24-70 mk2 when it was released?

Looks like the usual early adopter tax going on

$2,300....1 stop faster so more glass but still really expensive

The 50 1.2 is more shocking IMO. 50mm lenses tend to be the cheapest of a portfolio of primes. Imagine what an RF 85 1.2, and 35 1.4 will cost.

Sony has been known to have a premium... but the 24-70 2.8 had an msrp of $2,500, the 50 1.4 had an msrp $1,500.

I won't be buying the new lenses, there is no ROI in it for me. :( I would love the detail rendering these are rumored to have, but that just isn't enough of a gain to spend that on glass for me personally. I will just live vicariously through others that are willing to spend their hard earned cash on those.

Theres always the ability to adapt legacy EF lenses though. I think Canon is banking that most people will do that while they release these really esoteric lenses for people willing to pay that premium

Has there ever been a lens with an f2 aperture throughout that big of a zoom range? There's the Sigma 24-35mm f2, but a 28-70mm f2 is pretty wild so I get the price. As for the 50mm, judging from the online samples I've seen, it looks ridiculously sharp. We'll have to wait until the MTF charts to come out, but if it's Otus level or close to it, then the price would be somewhat justified.

the MTF charts are out, the 28-70f2 looks on par with the 24-70ii, which is impressive.

$3000 is a fair price, even a good price IMO. It's the weight and size that's a bigger issue, you can have a pair of 1.4 glass that could possibly weigh less and arguably give you a better look. I've sure there will still be a market for it, like there was for the 11-24. Just not a huge one.

The price of the 28-70 F2 is justified by the amount of glass it takes to build such a lens. But the value proposition in terms of the size/weight and F2 vs f2.8 or zoom vs f1.4 prime(s) is a matter of debate.

I shoot the majority of weddings with a pair of primes f1.4 on two bodies, so no interest in the lens for me.

In terms of the 50 1.2....it behaves like every fast prime based on MTF charts. Steep fall off in corner sharpness and not Otus caliber in that regard. That said, there's more to fast primes than sharpness as we know...rendering plays a big part, but there are no shortage of beautifully rendering fast primes that are much more affordable.

Agreed. And with mirrorless you get the benefits of magnifying the image and focus peaking in the EVF which makes manual focusing easier than ever. Within a few months of the release I'm sure there will be no shortage of adapters for other lens mounts allowing a massive amount of fast normal lenses. The Nikon Z already has a few available and the camera isn't even released yet!

That lack of IBIS, though, makes it a less attractive platform to vintage/MF lens users like me. I'm still not in love with the idea of moving to a Sony body, but that might be what I'll do.
