This is only a 'good' sunset shot if you're a motor sports fan and can put yourself in the shot.

Willowbank Raceway (Australian drag strip), a few years ago. It was the annual 'Winternationals' event, which starts in the afternoon and goes on into the evening.

Drag racing is pretty darn spectacular in the daytime. At night however, it takes on a whole new dimension. That's when the astounding power of those machines is really on display, by virtue of the unbelievable light show created by time-bending HP that is fuelled by a zillion gallons of petrol forced down the throat of an internal combustion engine, most of which seems to be burnt as the spent gas erupts out of the exhaust pipes.

As a consequence, knowing fans await the darker hours. If the apocalyptic noise that pummels your body when a Top Fuel dragster hammers by isn't enough thrill for you, the blinding flames will seal the deal.

In this shot, a break in proceedings timed to allow spectators to refuel with burgers, fries and 'Dagwood Dogs' (traditional Australian event food) has come to an end and the fun is about to recommence. It's fast becoming dark enough to ensure eyes are blinded by exploding, supercharged engines. That's what we came for.

Soon after this was taken, the Australian Top Fuel record was broken by a visiting American, Larry Dixon. He covered the 1/4 mile in 4.5 seconds, reaching 332mph - from a standing start.

I see all of that when I look at this photo, but I know the shot is nothing without the explanation :-)

Beautiful shot... I'm in Louisville. I'm assuming this was in Lexington? If so - Where exactly? I'm always looking for new locations. RRG being one of my favorites.

Thanks,

Jamey

Jacobson Park Reservoir in Lexington; exit 104 on I75, take a right, and you'll be at the park inside 4 miles.
