I am looking at the vertical grip locally $300. On ebay they have one from China with a Canon Box and Canon markings on the grip for $100

Is this a counterfeit knockoff and is it safe to use?

Probably a knock off as the Canon product is made in Taiwan. Are there any brand names on the product?

Are you aware that Adorama offers the Canon product for $200 and a knock off for $50? (2) used, excellent condition at $119 and a demo at $149. Personally if I was buying a knock-off I'd rather deal with Helen O than an eBay offering.

Yes it has "most" of the right stuff, I agree with you and will call Adorama

The ebay listing that Jeff linked is made in Taiwan. It says so in the item specifics field next to Country/region of manufacture and also in the photos of the item when you scroll down.

It's from China, not made in China.
Good price. Seller has long term good feedback.
Seems close to 'too good to be true'. Only 1 way to find out.

The big difference as I see it is on the picture on the thread it says CANON above the attachment screw while on the one from overseas it says battery grip. The Canon Inc below the screw is the same.

The pic in this thread is a BG-E13 though.
A BG-E11 has 'Canon' then underneath 'Battery Grip BG-E11'

Do you want one for 6D or 6D2?

BG-E20 (5D4) has only 'Battery Grip' and is made closer to the time the 6D2 grip is made.

You mentioned 6D, John posted a 6D grip, your ad is for a 6D2 grip.

I'd call Canon support and ask them if it's a fake.

Probably best to know which grip we are talking about first.
The link in first post is for a BG-E21 6D2 grip.
Those grips match the photo in that add, ie only have 'Battery Grip' printed above the screw.

Just like the BG-E20 5D4 grip:

A BG-E13 6D grip has 'Canon' printed above the screw as per John's photo

Another indication it is a fake when you cannot find a serial number.

I just took a look at the Canon grip mounted on my old 7D right now. Once it's on the camera, it doesn't say Canon on any surface that's visible. You have to remove that one to read the Canon logo on the top of the grip.

The roller you use to attach it doesn't protrude out at the front of that grip either. It's a WFT-E5B, by the way.
