Richard, I so much appreciate your very nice and thoughtful comments. In the case of this mallard, I'm pretty sure it was hawks. There is a pair of nesting Swainson's hawks, and also a nesting pair of Cooper's hawks; all living near by. I never saw them take one of her babies, but it would be likely that they were the culprits. LD, or Mike
